Why Young Entrepreneurs Should Contemplate Creating Their Own Jobs

By Whitney Sparks

Young Canadians are left scrambling for jobs in the current Canadian market. With a 14% unemployment rate for youth, it may be the perfect time for some young people to take matters into their own hands and start their own businesses. The benefits of first-time business ownership can outweigh the disadvantages for motivated youth entrepreneurs with imaginative ideas.

Starting your own business can be a daunting task, so it's important to study and explore the various aspects before diving in. Luckily, there are numerous online tools and even business grants for students that can help to kick-start the process. One granting program, the Government of Ontario's Summer Company, offers eligible candidates a chance at up to $3000, counselling and support while starting and operating their own summer businesses. Some of the skills needed to properly run your own enterprise would include marketing, sales, customer service, accounting/bookkeeping, organization, and many more. When applying for grants and using internet tools, make sure they match well with your qualifications and your intentions for the business.

Working for yourself offers the great advantage of a flexible work week, which allows you the opportunity to work different hours from the typical 9-5 work day. Taking a break for brunch with a colleague or working nights instead of days is completely within your control. Admittedly, entrepreneurs often work more hours than their regularly employed counterparts because they are trying to build their business and every hour logged can help create that competitive edge. So, it's essential to schedule some time off from your busy work schedule as well.

One of the most alluring reasons to become the CEO of your own company is the idea that you are now entirely in charge of your own future. You alone can make decisions about who you want to work with, which risks you are willing to take, and how to run your company based on your own personal value system. You can make fast decisions, and can consider the opinions of influential coaches, associates and friends when needed. Knowing the ultimate resolution is in your hands can be inspiring and empowering.

Another exciting advantage of entrepreneurship is the endless potential for income. The harder you work, the more likely you are to reap the financial benefits. The potential is there to build your business, and you can decide when to put money into improving your company and when to give yourself a paycheque.

Owning your own business can offer an immense sense of accomplishment and pride, especially as all your hard work starts to pay off and your business begins to make money. The opportunities for summer jobs for students in Ontario might be somewhat diminished, but with a little research, some business know-how and a little confidence, students can create their own employment.
