Becoming An Entrepreneur Can Be Exciting

By Rena Hudson

Becoming an entrepreneur is possible for everyone with a dream and an idea, skill, or talent. Some people make much better employees than bosses, even for themselves. Some like the security of a guaranteed check every pay period. Others find the constraints of working under supervision irksome and the idea of self-employment liberating. If the latter is you, maybe you should take the plunge into owning your own business.

Becoming an entrepreneur is really easy, in one sense. Getting a business license is as simple as a trip to the court house. You don't need anything much in the way of qualifications. Maybe you like to cut hair; you can do it for others in your kitchen. Maybe you love antiques or going to yard sales; you can recycle your finds from a flea-market booth. Perhaps you love gardening; join a farmer's market and sell produce or flowers as an independent dealer.

Some professions require special certification or licensing. Check your local and state regulations to find out if this is true for your career choice. Real estate sales, accounting, nutritional counseling, and electrical work are some fields that are not legally open to those who do not have the proper qualifications and training.

On a larger scale, you will need working capital for things like insurance, inventory, employee wages, advertising, and a million other things. To open a grocery, for example, you would require premises, shelving, cash registers, refrigerator and freezer units, special lighting, and easily cleaned floors and fixtures that comply with health codes. All this and more needs to be in order before you open for business.

Operating capital in large amounts might mean a bank loan, in which case you will need security to qualify. You can use your personal savings and credit - which is risky. Borrowing from friends and family involves others in risk. Partners might be able to make a contribution; partnerships are notoriously complicated but often profitable for all parties.

If this sounds stressful, it is. However, some people thrive on the rush of starting up and building a business from scratch. This experience might just teach you more than you will ever learn at college. Furthermore, if you truly have a dream, it would be too bad to never try to realize it. Even a failure is better than a blank slate.

Many of those people who live on high incomes made their fortunes through owning a small business, which can be very lucrative when a valued product or service is offered, when great customer service means high satisfaction rates, and when things are properly run. A lot of successful business men and women have published books, recorded tapes and videos, and offered seminars on how to succeed as your own boss. It is a fascinating subject.

Have you got a great idea? Do you think other people need or want what you have to offer? Becoming an entrepreneur could be your ticket to fame and fortune. Even if you only get to a level you are comfortable with, it still might be more fulfilling than a career working for someone else.
