How To Check If An Online Business Is Safe And Legal

By Russell Howe

Before you jump into any online business it's a good idea to check up on the legality and safety of the organization you intend to work with. While it's easy to find a dozen or more online programs which claim to be the best home based business opportunity, people often get a little bit lost when they want to check up on the background and legal standing of the program.

There are tens of thousands of genuine, legal and safe online businesses out there you can take your pick from, providing a means for thousands of people to build their family's income from the comfort of their home.

Of course, for every great program there is a not-so-great program. For every safe and genuine opportunity there is one which doesn't stack up quite so well. Most people presume that anything they see on the internet is too good to be true, that reputation is largely because of the negative reputation of multi-level marketing companies which didn't work out.

We're talking about those fly-by-night, flash-in-the-pan multi-level marketing opportunities which arrive on the scene in a cloud of hype and buzz only to disappear within three months and be replaced by a newer, shinier next big thing.

Some of the problem sits on the shoulders of the people looking for an easy ride to success, of course. Even when they find a genuine company to work with they do not push themselves at all and as a result you will even notice well established companies such as Global Domains International being labelled as scams from time to time by bitter affiliates who didn't get the most from their opportunity.

You don't want to put in the massive effort to change your financial future with a company who are planning to run off into the distance when the novelty wears off, after all.

So how do you discover whether or not a business is really genuine and here to stay for the long term?

* They should have an easily accessible state business license.

* If a business is genuine it will also have acquired the Federal Trade Commission seal of approval.

* Check the length of time the company has been up and running for.

MLM programs like to focus purely on their affiliate plans, this is a sure sign that they are going to provide a lackluster product which has no real value and, as a result, isn't worth joining because ultimately all members quit.

If the program is genuine it will have no reservations about showing it's FTC approved status and also it's business license for trading in the state where it's registered. Most will even make these visible on their website or forum.

One of the biggest factors in deciding upon the best home based business to build your future with is finding out whether it's legally registered and considered safe in your part of the world. If you cannot do that, then you should not join that particular program.
