Americans ' Paychecks are Lighter This Week

Two weeks after Congress hardly evaded America plummeting over the financial cliff, American citizens are spotting less cash in their paychecks. This is due to the payroll tax increase, which many critics are saying causes millions of American to make tough budget calls and cuts that their delegates in Washington are seemingly unwilling to tackle.

USA citizens had been more experiencing a cut on payroll taxes for the last two years, which reduced the tax that funds Social Security from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent. This amounts to $1,000 a year for someone who makes $50,000 annually and up to $4,500 on a household with 2 high-paid workers.

While many US citizens didn't realize this hit was coming to their paychecks, likely clouded by the big talk of the fiscal cliff, it has been a hot topic amongst many others leading to the creation of many forums where taxpayers impacted by the tax hike can commiserate.

Mark Zandi, a chief economic guru at Moody's Analysis, said To the Associated Press that the higher Social Security tax will slow growth by 0.6 p.c in 2013. This appears insubstantial , but for those USA citizens that will earn $41,000 and will receive $32 less in every bi-weekly paycheck, the change will be major. As I am frequently in front of my computer, my first vision board was a series of PowerPoint images that doubled as both the wallpaper and screensaver on my laptop. Keeping your goals "top of mind" helps you make small choices that will bring you closer to your ultimate goal.

3. Find quotes/movies/books that inspire you. Quotes have a way of cutting through the intellect and speaking straight to our soul. My favorite quote is, "Carpe - - hear it? - - Carpe, carpe diem, seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary" from the 1989 movie "Dead Poets Society".

4. Develop your personal mantra - words have incredible power. Put together a short sentence short sentences of positive, primal affirming words that resonates with your entrepreneurial spirit. Mantras can be short (i.e."Lets do this") or wider reaching ("I only manifest the best in my life - prosperity comes naturally to me). Keep a copy of this phrase in your wallet or taped to your computer monitor.

5. This won't work for everybody, but I have found meditation to be incredibly helpful. Sitting quietly for 10 minutes provides a clear perspective on things and allow you to distinguish between competing priorities. The goal of meditation is to stop thinking and just focus on breathing.

6. Reconnect with real humans - the only downside of working on-line is the isolation. You will feel better about yourself if you are able to get out of the house every so often. You will feel even better if you are able to help somebody else.

7. Frequent checking of your AdSense account or your Affiliate Sales stats is counter-productive. At best, you have made a sale and be motivated to continue. At worst, you just wasted your time and have felt discouraged with your lack of progress. If you allow this to happen several times a day, you become distracted from the serious tasks at hand. Why Listen?

Bob Barker, American icon and host of "The Price Is Right" for the past fifty years, retired in 2007. When asked about his career, Mr. Barker said that the key to his success is listening. "When I talk with someone, I listen. And I think if you do, you're going to find little nuggets of gold to go with."

I was reviewing a set of architecural plans that a client had drawn up recently, and couldn't understand some of the features that he had designed into his "dream home." For instance, the nook that he had drawn in the family room jutted out into the side porch. This area just did not work. It was isolated, square, and intruded into another space. I thought, maybe if I clip a corner, making it a forty-five degree angle, the space would flow into the rest of the room.

In the first design meeting with the client, however, I found out that he is a homeschooler with five children. He wanted a space where one of his kids could sit and read without being visually distracted, but still feel like he was part of the family. So my client had designed this rectangular nook off of the family room with a window seat and bookshelves. Now that's a real form and function gold nugget! Utilizing good listening skills, I will now be able to provide value to my client while helping him redesign his home.

It is common for our many of our clients have rooms in their home that have such fond memories attached to them that it is difficult for them to lose those spaces to a new design. Finding out what those spaces are is not always easy when meeting with the clients. Sometimes we don't find out how attached the clients themselves are to an existing room until we present the new design that has done away with the old space.

I recently designed a remodel that did away with the client's childhood bedroom. The client loved the new design, but couldn't bear to part with the room that held so many fond childhood memories, and who could blame her?

I'd be willing to bet that better listening skills would have saved us a considerable amount of design time, and spared her the shock of seeing her bedroom eliminated.

If good listening skills save us time and money, and add value to our product, then what exactly are good listening skills?

Great listening skills include:

-Making eye contact

-Waiting for the speaker to finish their sentence

-Asking pertinent questions

-Striving to understand the speaker

-Restating or summarizing the speaker's ideas

-Being genuinely interested in the speaker

Rather split it up in manageable portions by assigning each budget heading a subtask. Don't answer all mail but answer the first fifth of letters, then the second and so forth. With this method you make sure you always have the feeling you accomplished something while you are into completing the main task. Whereas 100% of the time working on the main task you probably feel like you did nothing at all.

Low levels of energy are often caused by us not taking care of our physical and psychological needs. By being so caught up with our business we often alienate us from everyone and easily let ourselves go with the argument that what we do is more important than having fun with friends or working out. But nothing is more important than being healthy and sane. Thus, include high priority task into your time management from the social and health sectors. Make it a task to meet with friends, go for a romantic dinner and/or spend some extra (unexpected) time with your kids. All this will not only make sure you can regain some of the energy you lost but also keep your environment happy. An extra plus!

Setting boundaries is very important to make sure you don't burn out. One boundary can be a maximum number of hours you work per day or the number of hours you work without a break. Meaning that just when you reached these maximum numbers of hours you stop working no matter whether are done or not. When you are honest with yourself you know that at a certain degree of exhaustion or sleep deprivation you can as well stop working because it doesn't change your output significantly. That is actually one of the best habits in terms of time management of successful entrepreneurs. They know when it is enough.

Outsourcing of certain well defined tasks is another active measure of successful time management. Look at all the hats you want to wear and select those you can easily give someone else. And if it is just a friend or family member for a certain time, you will see that you are not always indispensable. And this is a very important lesson to learn. You cannot be everywhere and some people may actually be more talented in doing advertising, accounting, etc. and be worth the money spent.

A tale of two companies

I have heard managers and owners of numerous companies mention how valuable their employees are. Often staff is put on the same level of value as customers; but, is it true or just lip service? Days like today (here in Kansas City) is an opportunity for employers to either put up or shut up!

If you have paid attention the weather channel (or for some of you just looked outside) we are having a winter weather fiasco! In other places of the world this type of snow fall would not effect business like it does here in Kansas City; however, we lack the man power and snow removal materials to make this day "normal". Most major roads, as well as almost all of the side streets are under 6-12 inches of snow with a thin layer of ice underneath. There are power outages throughout the area because of tree branches and power lines falling down.

On February 26, 2013 Kansas City got hit by the second winter storm in as many weeks.

Weather like this leads to the roads seeing far less traffic then normal. The people who are out on the roads might even be considered careless. Many of these poor people who braved the road ended up in a ditch or worse.

The company that I own and manage has over 50 people currently employed. Of those 50 people a little over half of the personnel is field employees with a company vehicle, the rest of the employees work in the office. A couple years ago out office personnel would not be able to get anything done outside of the office. We were looking to buy out another company over 300 miles away and decided to start moving some of the office jobs to remote servers. We put together a number of steps that I will talk about in a later article but these steps allowed for remote work. In situations like today we are able to tell our staff to stay at home and work and still be proficient with our office closed. Our field staff is recommended to take the day off unless of extenuating circumstances.

I know your thinking that nothing I have said up to this point is out of the normal in today's business environment. The difference between our company and others is we REALLY mean it!

A good friend of mine has a company who took all the same steps to make their employee's more mobile as my company. Their people can work from home and be just as efficient as my staff.

The owner of the company that my friend works for left home today an hour early and traveled to the office. He then sent out an email from the office letting everyone know that he beat the storm and the streets were not nearly as bad as they look. I would like to point out here I don't want to over look the responsibility we have to our employees to keeping ourselves safe. I am not saying the manger was incorrect in his actions, but if he had gotten stranded what effect would that have on his company?

As you might have guessed, the result of this action was swift and predictable. This owners staff started to make their way to the office to demonstrate to everyone their dedication. Four stranded vehicles, two accidents and one staff injury later, the same owner sent out an email explaining he is closing the office and everyone should stay home.

The reason I explain this story is a no obvious: Do you really care about your employees or are profits more important? If you care about your people then let them stay at home and use the tools you provided them to work remotely. If you don't care then don't invest your money on systems you will never use.

I truly feel my people are more important than any customer. I would not want my customers to risk anything on a day like this, so why would I ever put a more important asset at risk? I am encouraging my people to stay home and remain safe rather than risk it.

Use Of Monitoring Video Cameras To Be Able To Check The Company

Four of those are wireless cameras and video footage can be viewed online. The others are wired cams but, placed so discreetly, are hardly noticed. Thus, that is precisely how he knows what happens even though he is not around! Even footage taken with minimal lighting comes out clear considering that these are day/night bullet cameras.

It was due to the thirty built-in high-infrared illuminators which he once caught two personnel inside the warehouse carting off boxes. They never stood a chance.

The hardware compression feature of the DVR allows Boss to store footage without worrying he will run out of disc space. In the morning, he does check everything out that took place the evening before.

I seriously admire Mr. Brandon and am similarly impressed with our own security cameras system to keep an eye on our business.
